The Consortium manages a 733 hectare agricultural and forestry area, located 15 kilometers north of Barcelona, which has important agricultural, ecological, landscape, cultural and educational functions, and becomes a green lung in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. The main goal of the Consortium is to value this rural area through organic farming, with the objective of achieving a balance between agrarian activity (the main element for the economic and social sustainability of space) the natural environment and the public use. Since 2001, the Consortium of Gallecs collaborates with the UB. Through this agreement, the research team has established several long and short-term experiments aimed at improving the design and management of herbacius extensive rainfed crops and horticultural crops in order to harmonize agricultural management and the conservation of natural resources. The data collected since 2005 have shown the social and economic changes that have occurred in the rural population of the area and the adjacent urban areas.
